First Day of Summer!

First Day of Summer!

The Summer Solstice is today (1:16 P.M. EDT). Enjoy more sunlight today than on any other day of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere).

Did you know? In ancient Egypt, the New Year was celebrated when the star Sirius rose at around the time of sunrise. This roughly coincided with the summer solstice and the annual flooding of the Nile River.

Did you know? Stonehenge, England, a great monument build by farmers, also marked the solstice.

Learn more about Stonehenge, the solstice, and why it isn't the hottest day of the year. See June's Weather Wit and Wisdom Video.
