7:30PM, LOST INWOOD:

slides, photos & artifacts from our neighborhood's past

TONIGHT:

A reprise of Richard Rogers' fascinating 75 year old Inwood home movies

with new footage!

This month at Lost Inwood we'll present one of our most requested favorites; the annual showing of Richard Roberts' Tubby Hook home movies from the 1930s. They've been a perennial favorite at history night ever since their first showing in 2009.

If you don't know the story, Roberts grew up in one of the boathouses at the foot of Dyckman Street, and these digitized 16mm reels, combined with Roberts' inimitable, hilarious narration, bring to life the vibrant boat racing and riverfront scene that was Tubby Hook in the early 1900s.

And this year, there's a twist. We've carefully gone over the original digitized reels and unearthed several minutes of new, never-before-seen footage - including action from Van Cortland Park and the Hudson River boathouses which used to crowd the shoreline just below the George Washington Bridge.

Hendrick's Draught of the Week

Harpoon UFO White

Planet of Boston    16oz      4.8%abv     $6

"Light, crisp, refreshing UFO White follows in the tradition of spiced wheat beers that have been brewed in Belgium for well over 300 years. Brewed with orange peel and a unique blend of spices, UFO White is unfiltered for a more natural taste and appearance. "

Barrier Ruckus IPA

Oceanside, NY    16oz      6.4%abv     $7

"A big, aggressive IPA brewed entirely with Centennial hops. Piney, floral, grapefruit pith, and lots and lots of bitterness."

Captain Lawrence Captain's Reserve Imperial IPA

Elmsford, NY    12oz      9.0%abv     $8

"Hops, and lots of them. The aroma is bursting with the classic citrus and pine aroma of American-grown hops. The flavor is dominated by a hoppy bitterness, with just enough malt to make you want to take another sip."

Captain Lawrence Brown Bird

Elmsford, NY    16oz      4.8%abv     $6

"Named after the little birds that fly by the brewery looking for grain after the weather turns cold, this was originally to be a Fall/Winter seasonal. Clearly we underestimated the market for this smooth and malty brown ale, and we have decided to keep it for year round enjoyment.."

Who’s The Thug? White America Turns Its Backs On Justin Bieber But Still Considers Richard Sherman A Goon

Who’s The Thug? White America Turns Its Backs On Justin Bieber But Still Considers Richard Sherman A Goon

b2

Which person would you call a “thug?”

Richard Sherman Considered A Thug While Justin Bieber Is Not

Via Daily Beast reports:

A. The guy caught on camera screaming at and physically threatening a photographer? The person arrested for drag racing and admittedly driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol? The guy being sued for assaulting a photographer? Or,

B. An NFL football player who gave a very animated interview moments after making the game winning play in the biggest game of his career? The graduate of Stanford University who started a foundation to raise money to buy supplies for impoverished inner city schools?

Simple question, right? The answer would be A. except I forget to mention one fact: A is white and B is black. And that’s all the difference some people need in deciding whom to label a “thug.”

I’m, of course, talking about Justin Bieber and Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman. This week we saw an ugly display of racist slurs directed at Sherman simply because of the overly excited comments he made after the Seahawks won the NFC championship game.

To be brutally honest, the reason so many white people had an issue with Sherman’s interview was because in their view he was being an “uppity” black man. He wasn’t giving the cliché: “I want to thank God and my teammates” post-game speech that they wanted from him. Instead, he was speaking his mind, which at that moment was focused upon his on field war with San Francisco 49er receiver Michael Crabtree.

The backlash against Sherman was vicious and despicable. Some unleashed a flurry of racial slurs on social media. Others chose to label Sherman a “thug.”
